Playing Pebble Beach
I just came across an article I wrote last year for publication in a British magazine of golf. There exactly one year since I played my first round of golf in the U.S. ... and yes, it was at Pebble Beach. What an experience. I still can not believe it.
Driving along the highway 17 miles from Caramel, looking out the window of the car, eagerly seeking my first glance of this magnificent course passing some amazing properties, I can not describe my excitement. We had booked a stay of two nights at the Lodge, with a tee time 9 30 hours on Monday. The lodge itself is luxurious accommodation, it has a small entrance hall which opens onto a lounge and a terrace with views over the 18th green and the sea beyond. All is calm underestimated. We had a room overlooking the ocean, with fireplace and double doors opening onto a balcony which looked directly on the 18th green. Logs were neatly stacked outside the hall and the fire together and ready to go. And with the sea fog, the fire was hot welcome. It could be 100 to 110 degrees inland, but on the coast, it was more like 55-60 degrees.
Unfortunately the sea fog obscured much of the view for much of our stay, but has an interesting glimpse of the rugged coastline and the sparkling ocean. He takes nothing away from golf, I hasten to say. It is part of the experience of Pebble Beach. My playing partners proved be a man from New York, who had brought his grandson, son of 13 years old to play here for three days, and also a gentleman from Illinois. I was once again highlighted the international nature of the game and immediately connects you with complete strangers, simply by sharing a passion for beautiful game. I can not think of an easier way to meet such a range of people.
My own partner (who had booked it as a pleasure for me - lucky, lucky me) has not played golf for years and decided to Cart ... except that it is not allowed, so that driving the car instead, and make sure he got a kick of equal experience I did, and we're off to the driving range Stanford later (the stage of practice time university Tiger), as it is now caught the bug of golf!
Return to Pebble Beach .. the clubs have been borrowed, it is to say, Callaway graphite shaft and not far from new. The range was up the street, easily accessible with assistance of the courtesy bus and once there the golf balls were neatly lined up in baskets. It was great to have a bit of swing and relax on the beach, even if the fog was a little difficult to see where the ball was going! However, if you can not see the result, it is easy Assuming that all the bullets flying though! (A positive mental approach is always better for your confidence!) And, joking aside, it does help you improve your sense kinesthetic, and learn to feel better where the ball goes. It's always a plus in golf.
In the starting box, our departure had a few words to say - no phones, no mulligans, we were expected to take until 4:20 ET to keep half a hole behind group in front. The advice given was that the course is eminently playable ... even if the Greens are very small and therefore not go to the pin, just to target the center of the green ... and have fun. Advice.
I was aware of the amount of adrenaline coursing through my body due to pure excitement, and I wondered once more to the task of professional players have to control this instinctive reaction whenever they play. It pays to have as many mental skills as possible to take advantage, so stay calm and relaxed and focused. It also pays to have a plan how you will tackle each and every hole, especially when the Greens are as tight as these. You must know your films and plan your ideal approach to the green and then play Your tee shot accordingly.
This is not good just break your driver to the driveway and then see what you can do from there ... this is not the way to play any course, to say nothing of Pebble Beach. I understand very well why Tiger spent a lot of time filming in all green, practice with all the pin position, all positions imaginable approach to produce phenomenal results that did in 2000 U.S. Open - 15 strokes under his nearest rival.
Tiger has shown us how playable Pebble Beach is, as long as you use your mind and your body - to think clearly and logically in order to utilize the best management course, and then remain calm and focused in order to execute this plan. Sounds easy, does not it? But how good golf is played. Unless you use your mind well, everything you will never be the goal hitting the ball forward and hope for a good result - sometimes you're lucky, sometimes you will not.
And this is not the only difference between a professional golfer and a good club. A professional practices and practices and practices, and every moment available is spent practicing. I'm not saying that all golfers club should do the same thing, just that we can not expect to play like a pro unless you agree to exercise diligently and also to acquire the mental skills that are equally essential. The mental skill, of course, take far less time to learn and repeat, and therefore it's quicker, easier and less time through use which promote consistency and, ultimately, to lower your handicap.
Golfers Club, who play for their team in the league from scratch, or your regional team, or the like, should all be emulating the professional golfer. If you are on a team, you owe it to your contemporaries to make your best. For the rest of us, it only matters to us personally how we choose to approach the game. Whatever the approach you want to take is good for you ... but to play your best golf, learning the habits of preparing plans for a professional practice - different learn the game of the mind ... and remember to have fun, remember, golf is a game - enjoy!
I certainly Popular Pebble Beach. I, like many other golfers, I am sure he will play every day, if only it were possible. Jack Nicklaus has said that if only he had another series to play, he would choose to play at Pebble Beach. The fairways are beautiful, the Greens are not too slow or too fast, the rough is fair, the bunkers are filled with white powder sand (I know - I spent much time in them), the holes are interesting and challenging, the views are great (even if seen through a cloud of fog!), and there's nothing like playing this legendary course.
The U.S. Open is back again in 2010, and for my part, will get tickets. I'm already looking forward to walk on this hallowed ground once more. And who knows, maybe I'll get to play again for a while? ... And over time, hopefully I'll keep my next shot on 18 ... I unfortunately hit a little too much enthusiasm the bunker onto the green and outside in the beautiful blue ocean! I would not mind, but I used the same ball all the way until that fateful moment, just a realization that I felt. A dramatic end to my tour, which only serves to fuel my determination to play again at the first opportunity.
